DSP"S Two Cents On Training
By Carol Jones | Published  01/25/2006

After over 30 years as a DSP,attendant, PA, etc. ( whatever we're being called this week) a lot has changed for my freinds with disabilities. They have more training offered to them, then ever before. They have training from driving with no hands to, managing they money. All which are great programs. But, when it comes to attendants, not much training is offered. It's time for the Disability Coummnity and the the Attendants to work together. I know a lot of people with disabilities that have had as many as 5 attendants in two months. This is a problem but, who's? I find it hard to beleive 5 very bad attendants where sent to the same person for two months. May just  be a case of not being trained with the consumer you'll be supporting. Or maybe, the consumer needs training to manage an attendant. We need some DSP old-timers ( over 5 years since most don't last 1 year )to get together with difference disability groups and offer DSP training.  It's been said, no two people are alike. It doesn't say, until you become an attendant or if you have a disability.
